UN Chief Names Chile’s Claudia Fuentes Julio as Human Rights Chief
Fuentes Julio succeeds Ilze Brands Kehris of Latvia, whom Guterres and Volker Turk expressed deep gratitude to for her contributions, including strengthening the human rights pillar within the UN alongside peace, security, and development efforts.
As assistant secretary-general, Fuentes Julio will lead OHCHR’s New York office, advising and representing the high commissioner in New York-based forums.
Currently Chile’s permanent representative to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva, Fuentes Julio brings over 20 years of experience in international relations, multilateral diplomacy, and human rights. She has also held senior positions, including vice-president of the Human Rights Council and chair of the Governing Body of the International Labor Organization.
