EU Unveils Aid Package for Armenia Amid Russian Trade Limits

(MENAFN) European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday announced a new European Union support package for Armenia following expanded Russian restrictions on agricultural imports, according to reports.

The package includes immediate financial assistance exceeding €50 million (about $58 million), with further support expected in the future, she said in a written statement.

The announcement came after a conversation with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Von der Leyen described Russia’s move as economic pressure, arguing that export restrictions on Armenian goods amount to coercion.

“This is nothing short of economic coercion, and it is unacceptable. By extending export restrictions on Armenian products, Moscow is weaponising economic relations for political pressure,” she said.

She also outlined measures intended to ease trade flows for affected Armenian products and support impacted industries, including agriculture.

Among the examples cited, she noted that a shipment of 10,000 flowers is expected to reach Latvia soon, with additional exports planned in the near future.
